What this trial studies
This clinical trial aims to evaluate the feasibility and impact of an adaptive rowing exercise intervention for adults who use motorized wheelchairs. Participants will engage in 12 sessions of supervised rowing over a seven-week period, focusing on cardiovascular endurance, mobility perception, and quality of life. The study will assess the acceptability, adherence, intensity, and safety of the intervention through pre- and post-assessments. The research will take place at the University of South Carolina Rehab Lab and involve a small cohort of 10 participants.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults who use motorized wheelchairs and can perform a rowing motion with their upper extremities.
Not a fit: Patients with existing pressure sores, unstable angina, or uncontrolled arrhythmias may not benefit from this study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this intervention could enhance cardiovascular fitness and overall quality of life for individuals using motorized wheelchairs.
How similar studies have performed: While similar adaptive exercise interventions have shown promise, this specific approach using an adaptive rower is relatively novel.
