What this trial studies
The Strong Teens for Healthy Schools program is a school-based initiative aimed at empowering middle school students to enhance their physical activity and healthy eating habits. This cluster-randomized controlled trial will involve Title 1 middle schools in Texas, where schools will be randomly assigned to either the intervention group, which participates in the STHS program, or a control group that continues with usual care. The program focuses on creating positive changes in school health environments and aims to improve cardiovascular disease-related outcomes among 6th and 7th-grade students. The effectiveness of the program will be evaluated immediately after the intervention and one year later.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this program are 6th and 7th-grade students attending Title 1 middle schools with a significant percentage of economically disadvantaged and minority students.
Not a fit: Students who have participated in a weight loss program in the past three months or have conditions that prevent them from engaging in physical activity may not benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this program could lead to improved cardiovascular health and healthier lifestyle choices among middle school students.
How similar studies have performed: Other studies focusing on school-based interventions for improving health outcomes in similar populations have shown promising results, indicating potential success for this approach.
