What this trial studies
Hospitals in Angers, Brest, and Nantes co-designed a prototype single room called Hospi'Senior aimed at improving care for elderly inpatients. Eligible patients aged 75 or older admitted to short-stay geriatric units are placed in either a Hospi'Senior room or a conventional single room and their outcomes are compared. The primary outcome is length of stay, with secondary outcomes including changes in functional ability, behavioral disorders, falls, pressure ulcers stage ≥2, and early rehospitalization measured during the stay and up to 30 days after discharge. Data are collected prospectively to determine whether the room design affects these clinical and safety outcomes.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Ideal candidates are patients aged 75 or older admitted from the emergency department or directly from home to a short-stay geriatric unit who are placed in a single room and can consent or have an authorized representative.
Not a fit: Patients with planned admissions, those in double rooms, those hospitalized more than three days before enrollment, those with poor French comprehension, under legal protection, or with a medical contraindication are excluded and would not be expected to benefit from this comparison.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the Hospi'Senior room could shorten hospital stays and reduce complications such as falls, pressure ulcers, and early readmissions for older inpatients.
How similar studies have performed: Previous studies of hospital environment and room-design interventions for older adults have shown mixed but occasionally positive effects on falls and functional outcomes, so the approach is promising but not definitively proven.
