What this trial studies

The ENERGYCO study is a cluster-randomized controlled trial that investigates the energy expenditure associated with different modes of commuting to school, specifically focusing on cycling. In Phase I, the study will develop predictive equations to quantify energy expenditure during walking, cycling, and motorized-vehicle commuting, using indirect calorimetry with around 50 adolescents. Phase II will evaluate the effects of an eight-week school-based cycling intervention on health-related outcomes in approximately 300 adolescents aged 12-16 from three Spanish cities. The study aims to provide valuable insights into how active commuting can enhance physical and mental health in adolescents.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this study are adolescents aged 12-16 who attend schools with facilities for bicycle parking and no specific school bus routes.

Not a fit: Patients who do not attend participating schools or those who are not interested in cycling as a mode of commuting may not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this study could lead to improved health outcomes and increased physical activity levels among adolescents.

How similar studies have performed: Other studies have shown positive outcomes with similar interventions focusing on active commuting and physical activity in adolescents.
