What this trial studies

This observational study aims to evaluate the feasibility of a speech recognition application (SRAVI) designed to assist patients with tracheostomies in communicating. The study will involve a multi-centre prospective observational cohort design, recruiting at least 55 patients who have undergone tracheostomy in acute or critical care settings. Participants will use the SRAVI device, which translates lip movements into text, and their experiences will be explored through qualitative interviews with patients, their significant others, and healthcare professionals. Data will be collected on the frequency of SRAVI use, compliance, and any adverse events.

Who should consider this trial

Good fit: Ideal candidates include adults aged 18 and over who have undergone a tracheostomy in an acute or critical care setting and can articulate words through lip movements.

Not a fit: Patients who are unable to move their lips to articulate words or those who decline consent will not benefit from this study.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this application could significantly enhance communication for patients with tracheostomies, reducing distress and improving care.

How similar studies have performed: While the approach is innovative, similar studies exploring communication aids for patients with tracheostomies have shown promise, indicating potential for success.
