What this trial studies
This single-site, two-arm, parallel-group randomized trial will enroll about 200 adults (100 English-speaking, 100 Spanish-speaking) seeking care at a free acute care clinic. Participants will be randomized to listen to a 4-minute mindfulness audio or a 4-minute pain psychoeducation audio. Clinical effects on pain and related outcomes will be measured before and after the intervention to compare short-term responses between arms. The trial excludes people with cognitive impairment that prevents completing study procedures and those with unstable illnesses judged to interfere with participation.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Adults aged 18 or older seeking treatment at Shepherd's Hope Downtown Clinic who speak English or Spanish and can complete brief study procedures are the intended participants.
Not a fit: Patients with cognitive impairment that prevents completing study procedures, those with unstable medical conditions, or those needing urgent specialty care are unlikely to benefit from this brief audio intervention.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, a 4-minute mindfulness audio could offer a low-cost, easily delivered option to reduce pain or improve coping for patients in resource-limited clinic settings.
How similar studies have performed: Prior small studies of brief mindfulness exercises have shown modest short-term benefits for pain and coping, but very-short (4-minute) audio formats are less well-studied.
