1-1-2 emergency calls for drowning incidents
The Emergency Call on Drowning: A Registry-based Cohort Study of the Characteristics, Predictors, and Outcomes of Fatal and Non-fatal Drowning
This project will look at 1-1-2 emergency calls for people who drowned to see which caller, setting, and dispatcher factors relate to 30-day survival.

What this trial studies
This is a registry-based cohort analysis linking the national Danish Prehospital Drowning Data with recorded 1-1-2 emergency call audio and dispatcher electronic records. Investigators will separate drowning-related out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) from non-OHCA events and create variable lists for each. Trained reviewers will listen to calls to extract symptoms, communication barriers, and other call-related factors, and these will be analyzed alongside patient and outcome data with 30-day follow-up. If feasible, a qualitative analysis of calls will identify barriers to optimal dispatch handling of drowning incidents.
Who should consider this trial
Good fit: Any age patient recorded in the Danish Prehospital Drowning Data with a valid civil registration number, available call audio, and 30-day survival data is eligible.
Not a fit: Patients with obvious signs of irreversible death, a valid DNAR or other orders limiting life-sustaining therapy, missing identification number, corrupted/missing audio files, or missing 30-day survival are not likely to benefit from inclusion.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, the findings could help dispatch centers recognize drowning faster and provide clearer instructions, potentially improving survival and outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: Call-audio and registry linkage approaches have informed improvements in other emergency conditions, but this specific focus on drowning is novel and has not been previously explored.
Eligibility criteria

Inclusion Criteria: * Patients at all ages registered in the Danish Prehospital Drowning Data are eligible. Exclusion Criteria: * Obvious clinical signs of irreversible death (decapitation, decomposition, post-mortem lividity, post-mortem rigidity) * A valid Do-Not-Attempt-Resuscitation (DNAR) order or other code status orders limiting life-sustaining therapies * Missing or corrupted audio files * Missing identification number * Missing 30-day survival
