What this research studies

As a patient, I could join NCI clinical trials run locally through a partnership of three Wisconsin health systems (Marshfield Clinic, Gundersen, and ThedaCare). The network opens many kinds of trials, including early-phase treatment studies and trials that look at how cancer care is delivered, and local research teams help identify who is eligible. Staff coordinate appointments, collect tests and samples, and work with my regular care team to manage trial participation. The program emphasizes increasing access for people in rural areas who might otherwise need to travel far for clinical trials.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: People with cancer who receive care at or near Marshfield Clinic, Gundersen Health System, ThedaCare, or affiliated clinics in Wisconsin, upper Michigan, northern Iowa, or southeast Minnesota are the most likely candidates for available NCI-sponsored trials.

Not a fit: People who live outside the network's catchment area or whose cancer type or health status does not match any open trials may not benefit from this program.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could give more people in rural communities access to cutting-edge cancer treatments and improved care options without long travel.

How similar studies have performed: Other NCORP community networks have successfully increased rural patient enrollment in NCI trials, and WiNCORP has been recognized as a high-performing site.
