What this research studies

This center will bring clinical trials closer to home by partnering with local hospitals, clinics, and community organizations across New Mexico and neighboring IDeA states. It will staff trained pediatric investigators and research teams who coordinate multisite studies and follow high-quality research procedures. The center emphasizes community engagement to recruit children from rural, Native American, Hispanic, African American, Asian, and other underrepresented groups. It also partners with the Clinical and Translational Sciences Center to support data collection, biospecimens when needed, and workforce training so more local clinicians can run pediatric trials.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: Children from birth through early adolescence in New Mexico and nearby IDeA states—especially those from rural or underrepresented racial and ethnic groups—who are eligible for one of the center's pediatric trials.

Not a fit: Children who do not meet eligibility criteria for the specific trials offered, or who cannot travel to participating sites and for whom remote options are not available, may not receive direct benefit.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the center could increase access to new treatments and improve health outcomes for children in underserved and rural communities.

How similar studies have performed: Regional pediatric trial centers and clinical trial networks have previously improved enrollment and access for underrepresented children, and this center builds on those established models.
