What this research studies
You would be invited to share your experiences through interviews and group discussions so researchers can learn how mistrust and misinformation shape HIV prevention choices like PrEP. The team will partner with community advisors and local organizations in the Chicago area to gather stories from Latinx sexual and gender minority community members. Researchers will use those insights to adapt an existing HIV prevention program to be more culturally relevant and trusted. They may then pilot the adapted program to see if people find it acceptable and useful.
Who could benefit from this research
Good fit: Ideal candidates are Latinx sexual and gender minority adults (people who identify as Latino/a/x or of Latin American origin and who are LGBTQ+) who live locally and have experience or concerns about HIV prevention or healthcare mistrust.
Not a fit: People who are not Latinx sexual and gender minorities or who already have strong, trusted connections to HIV prevention services may not receive direct benefits from participating.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this work could produce HIV prevention programs that are more trusted, accessible, and effective for Latinx sexual and gender minority people.
How similar studies have performed: Previous work shows that addressing medical mistrust can improve engagement in care, but adapting community- and structural-level HIV prevention specifically for Latinx sexual and gender minorities is relatively novel.
