Understanding how urban and rural environments affect Alzheimer's-related dementia

Assessing Urban-Rural Environmental Stress Inequities in ADRD through Ecological Momentary Assessment

['FUNDING_R01'] · TRUSTEES OF INDIANA UNIVERSITY · NIH-10977884

This study is looking at how different stressors in city and country living can affect the risk of developing Alzheimer's-related dementia, and it's for people in Indiana who are at higher risk; you'll use a mobile app to share your experiences and wear a smartwatch to track your health over two weeks.

What this research studies

This research investigates the impact of environmental stressors on the development of Alzheimer's Disease-Related Dementias (ADRD) in urban and rural populations. It will involve 600 participants from Indiana, half of whom live in urban areas and half in rural settings, all identified as high risk for ADRD. Participants will use a mobile app to report their stressors over two weeks while their physical activity and health data are monitored through a smartwatch. The goal is to analyze how these environmental factors contribute to health inequities in dementia.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: Ideal candidates are individuals aged 65 and older who are at high risk for developing Alzheimer's-related dementia and have mild cognitive impairment.

Not a fit: Patients who do not have mild cognitive impairment or are younger than 65 years old may not benefit from this research.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this research could lead to improved understanding and interventions for reducing the risk of Alzheimer's-related dementia based on environmental factors.

How similar studies have performed: Previous research has shown success in using ecological momentary assessment to understand health behaviors and stressors, suggesting this approach may yield valuable insights.
