Understanding heart and lung health changes over a lifetime

Patterns of Cardiopulmonary health across the life course

['FUNDING_R01'] · NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY · NIH-11126627

What this research studies

Many people experience chronic lung disease and heart failure, often at the same time, which can lead to serious health issues. We know that lung problems can affect heart health, even when lung symptoms aren't obvious. This work focuses on understanding how these changes begin and progress in younger adults, before serious symptoms appear. By identifying these early patterns and differences across various groups, we hope to find new ways to prevent irreversible damage to the heart and lungs.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: This research is relevant for adults aged 21 and older who are interested in understanding the long-term development of heart and lung conditions.

Not a fit: Patients with advanced, established heart failure or chronic lung disease may not directly benefit from this particular early detection research.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this work could lead to earlier detection and prevention strategies for chronic lung disease and heart failure, potentially improving long-term health outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: Previous work has shown a connection between chronic lung disease and heart failure, but this project aims to uncover the specific timing and mechanisms of these changes from young adulthood to midlife, which is a novel focus.
