What this research studies
This important project seeks to understand how a child's early life experiences, including factors like maternal health, stress, and environmental exposures, interact with their genes to shape brain development. Researchers will follow 7,200 mothers and their infants from birth through age 10, collecting detailed information. This includes using advanced brain imaging like MRI and EEG, along with various tests for behavior, body functions, and mental well-being, as well as biological samples. The goal is to create a comprehensive picture of typical brain development, which will help us identify when things might go off track.
Who could benefit from this research
Good fit: Ideal participants would be pregnant mothers and their infants who are willing to participate in a long-term follow-up through their child's first 10 years of life.
Not a fit: Patients who are not pregnant or do not have young children within the specified age range would not directly benefit from participating in this particular project.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this work could help identify early signs of developmental challenges and lead to better ways to support children's healthy growth.
How similar studies have performed: While individual aspects of child development have been studied, this project is novel in its large scale, comprehensive approach, and long-term follow-up across a diverse US population.

About this research
- This is an active NIH-funded research project — typically early-stage science, not a clinical trial accepting patient enrollment.
- Some NIH-funded labs run parallel clinical studies or seek volunteers for related work. To check, contact the principal investigator or institution listed above.
