This project aims to learn how babies' brains and bodies grow and develop over their first 10 years, especially how early life experiences shape this journey.

What this research studies
We want to create a clear picture of how children's brains develop normally during their first decade of life. This involves following 7,200 mothers and their babies from pregnancy through age 10, collecting information about their health, environment, and development. We will use advanced brain imaging, behavioral tests, and biological samples to understand how genes and experiences work together. Our goal is to identify how factors like stress or certain exposures might affect a child's growth, helping us better support healthy development.
Who could benefit from this research
Good fit: Ideal participants are pregnant mothers and their infants who are willing to participate in a long-term follow-up through the child's first 10 years of life.
Not a fit: Patients who are not pregnant or do not have infants within the specified age range would not directly benefit from participation in this particular study.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this work could help us understand how to best support healthy brain development in children and identify early signs of potential challenges.
How similar studies have performed: While individual studies have looked at aspects of child development, this project is novel in its large scale, comprehensive approach, and long-term follow-up across many sites.

About this research
- This is an active NIH-funded research project — typically early-stage science, not a clinical trial accepting patient enrollment.
- Some NIH-funded labs run parallel clinical studies or seek volunteers for related work. To check, contact the principal investigator or institution listed above.
