What this research studies

We want to understand if a special program, called CA Bridge, helps people with opioid use disorder get the right medications when they visit an emergency room. This program has been put in place in many California emergency departments, and we are looking at existing patient records to see its effects. Our goal is to see if patients start medication for opioid use disorder sooner and if the program helps reduce differences in care for various patient groups, including those in rural areas or from different racial and ethnic backgrounds. This information will help improve how emergency rooms provide care for opioid use disorder.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: This research is relevant to Medicaid patients in California who have received care for opioid use disorder in an emergency department.

Not a fit: Patients who do not have opioid use disorder or who are not covered by California Medicaid would not directly benefit from this specific research.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this work could lead to better and more equitable emergency department care for patients with opioid use disorder, potentially reducing overdose risks.

How similar studies have performed: While CA Bridge is an innovative program, this project provides a rigorous evaluation of its real-world impact, building on the need for more data on policy effectiveness.
