What this research studies

This research investigates the factors that contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes in adolescents, particularly those who are overweight or have prediabetes. By conducting a multi-center study, the team will analyze how various biological and lifestyle factors affect insulin resistance and diabetes progression over time. Participants will undergo a series of oral glucose tolerance tests to monitor their insulin response and identify those at highest risk for developing diabetes. The goal is to create targeted interventions that can help prevent the onset of diabetes in at-risk youth.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this research are adolescents aged 12-20 who are overweight and have been identified as having prediabetes.

Not a fit: Patients who are not adolescents or do not have risk factors for diabetes, such as those with a healthy weight and no family history of diabetes, may not benefit from this research.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this research could lead to better prevention strategies for type 2 diabetes in adolescents, potentially reducing the incidence of this serious condition.

How similar studies have performed: Previous research has shown promise in identifying risk factors for diabetes in youth, but this study aims to refine those approaches and provide more targeted interventions.
