Understanding Dementia Risk in Nepal Amidst Migration and Conflict
International Labor Migration, Armed Conflict and Dementia Risk in Nepal: A Population Study
This project aims to understand how international labor migration and armed conflict might affect the risk of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias in the aging population of Nepal.

What this research studies
This project is building the foundation for long-term research into Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) in Nepal, a country where this information is currently very limited. We plan to train local researchers in methods for collecting data and identifying ADRD in the general population. Our goal is to create a new, ongoing study that will follow people over time to learn more about ADRD and other age-related health conditions. This will help us understand the unique factors affecting dementia risk in Nepal, including the effects of migration and conflict.
Who could benefit from this research
Good fit: This project is focused on the general adult population in Nepal, particularly those aged 21 and older, to understand population-level dementia risk factors.
Not a fit: Patients seeking immediate individual treatment or direct clinical intervention for their dementia may not receive direct benefit from this foundational population-based research.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this work could lead to the development of tailored prevention strategies to reduce the burden of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias in Nepal.
How similar studies have performed: While population studies on dementia exist globally, this approach is novel for Nepal, where there is currently very little research capacity or basic information on Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.
