What this research studies

Chronic kidney disease affects millions, particularly minority communities, and we need better, more personalized treatments. This project, part of the national Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP), aims to gather detailed information from kidney biopsies and health records to uncover new ways to understand and treat kidney disease. At the University of Illinois at Chicago, a team of experts is dedicated to recruiting a diverse group of patients. We plan to enroll 100 participants, with a special focus on non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic individuals, to collect important kidney tissue samples and track their health over time.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults aged 21 or older with chronic kidney disease who are willing to undergo a research kidney biopsy and participate in long-term follow-up.

Not a fit: Patients who are not able to undergo a kidney biopsy or commit to long-term follow-up may not be suitable for this specific opportunity.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this work could lead to new ways to classify chronic kidney disease and develop more personalized and effective treatments for patients.

How similar studies have performed: This project is part of the larger national Kidney Precision Medicine Project, which builds on existing efforts to understand kidney disease at a molecular level.
