What this research studies
This project aims to create a new, long-term group of Native Hawaiians and Micronesian Pacific Islanders in Hawai‘i to better understand heart, lung, and metabolic health, including conditions like diabetes. We know that these communities face higher rates of these health issues, and this project will gather information across multiple generations. By using advanced technology and working closely with community leaders, we hope to overcome past challenges in research and find new ways to improve health for these populations.
Who could benefit from this research
Good fit: Ideal participants would be Native Hawaiians and Micronesian Pacific Islanders living in Hawai‘i, including individuals from different generations within families.
Not a fit: Patients who are not Native Hawaiian or Micronesian Pacific Islander, or who do not reside in Hawai‘i, would not directly benefit from participation in this specific observational cohort.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this project could lead to a deeper understanding of health disparities and new strategies to prevent and manage heart, lung, and metabolic diseases in Native Hawaiian and Micronesian Pacific Islander communities.
How similar studies have performed: While previous studies among Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders have faced methodological challenges, this project aims to use innovative approaches to address persistent health inequities.
