Testing for antibodies to understand COVID-19 exposure and immunity

SARS-CoV-2 Serological Antibody Testing for Disease Surveillance and Clinical Use

NIH-funded research Kaiser Foundation Research Institute · NIH-10855011

This study is looking for people aged 7 and older from the Kaiser Permanente Northern California health system to help us understand how long antibodies against COVID-19 last and how many people have been exposed to the virus, even if they didn't show any symptoms.

What this research studies

This research focuses on serological testing to detect antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. By identifying individuals who have been exposed to the virus, even if they were asymptomatic, the study aims to provide a clearer picture of the pandemic's epidemiology. Participants, aged 7 and older, will be recruited from the Kaiser Permanente Northern California health system to monitor antibody development over time. The study will also explore the longevity of the antibody response and the risk of seroconversion in different populations.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: Ideal candidates for participation include individuals aged 7 years and older who are members of the Kaiser Permanente Northern California health system.

Not a fit: Patients who have not been exposed to SARS-CoV-2 or those outside the age range may not benefit from this research.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this research could enhance our understanding of COVID-19 immunity and inform public health strategies.

How similar studies have performed: Previous research has successfully utilized serological testing to assess immunity and exposure in various populations, indicating a promising approach.
