What this research studies

From a patient perspective, the project helps VA HIV clinics adopt HITIDES, a team-based depression program where an off-site depression care team partners with local providers. Each clinic will have a local "clinical champion" and join a learning collaborative of peers, and some clinics will also receive extra help from an outside implementation expert to see which support works best. The study will track how many patients are reached, how clinics adopt the program, and the costs of each approach. If your VA HIV clinic takes part, you may be offered coordinated follow-up and treatment for depression through the HITIDES team.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: Ideal candidates are Veterans living with HIV who receive care at participating VA HIV clinics and have symptoms of depression.

Not a fit: Veterans who do not receive care at the participating VA HIV clinics or who do not have depression are unlikely to benefit directly from this project.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, more Veterans living with HIV could get timely, coordinated depression treatment and the VA could deliver that care more widely and efficiently.

How similar studies have performed: A prior randomized trial showed the HITIDES approach improved depression symptoms for Veterans with HIV and produced cost savings, but it has not yet been rolled out across VA HIV clinics.
