What this research studies

This project builds a network of hospitals, clinics, and community partners across South Dakota to run multicenter pediatric trials. The team will train local staff, establish trial procedures, and support safe enrollment and follow-up in both hospital and community settings. They will work closely with community groups and nonprofits to design trials that fit local needs and improve access for rural and American Indian families. The network will also share results and best practices so more children can benefit from research over time.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: Children from newborns through school age in South Dakota—especially those in rural, frontier, and American Indian communities—would be eligible to participate when a specific trial fits their condition.

Not a fit: Children living outside South Dakota, those whose medical condition is not included in an active trial, or families unable to attend participating clinics may not benefit from this network.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, more children in underserved South Dakota communities could access new treatments and clinical research without long-distance travel.

How similar studies have performed: Regional pediatric trial networks have previously increased enrollment and access to pediatric research, so this approach builds on a successful model.
