What this research studies

This project aims to make sure that the voices of patients and their loved ones, especially those with experience in the criminal legal system, are heard when developing and sharing new treatments for opioid and other substance use disorders. We want to involve these important partners in creating and spreading effective prevention and treatment methods for these conditions and overdose risks. This includes setting up a "Lived Experience Board" and offering training and webinars to help everyone understand and use the latest research findings. Our goal is to improve how effective care reaches those who need it most.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: This project is primarily for individuals with lived experience of opioid or other substance use disorders, their loved ones, and those with experience in the criminal legal system who wish to contribute to improving care.

Not a fit: Patients not interested in participating in advisory boards, training, or sharing their experiences may not directly benefit from this specific engagement project.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this work could lead to more effective and patient-centered prevention and treatment services for opioid and other substance use disorders, particularly for individuals with criminal legal system involvement.

How similar studies have performed: While the specific approach of this core is unique in its comprehensive stakeholder engagement, the concept of involving patient voices in healthcare improvement has shown success in other areas.
