What this research studies
You can join trials run by local clinic sites that test new HIV prevention tools and treatment strategies. The unit partners with national networks (ACTG, HPTN, HVTN) and two main Bay Area sites to enroll participants, collect samples, and monitor safety and adherence. Staff work with community groups to support enrollment, retention, and following study procedures, and provide regular clinic visits and testing. The program also trains new HIV researchers so future studies continue improving care.
Who could benefit from this research
Good fit: People living with HIV or who are at high risk for HIV—particularly men who have sex with men and people who inject drugs—who can travel to Bay Area clinic visits and meet specific trial eligibility.
Not a fit: People who live far from the Bay Area, are unable to attend regular clinic visits, or who do not meet health or age criteria for specific trials may not benefit or be eligible.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: Could bring new prevention tools, better treatment options, and improved support for staying on medications to people at risk for or living with HIV.
How similar studies have performed: Previous trials run by the ACTG, HPTN, and HVTN have produced effective HIV treatments and prevention tools, so this work builds on proven network experience.
