What this research studies

Researchers at Duke and UNC are creating a regional coordinating center that brings together 22 hospitals to run stroke clinical trials across eastern North Carolina and southern Virginia. The center will enroll adults with stroke or at high risk for stroke, coordinate treatments and follow-up visits, and collect outcomes across hospitals including rehabilitation and pediatric services. ENVISION focuses on suburban and rural communities and aims to include groups that are traditionally underrepresented in clinical research. The network will use existing clinical infrastructures and CTSAs to manage recruitment, retention, and data sharing for multiple stroke-related trials.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: Adults (age 21 and older) who live in or receive care in eastern North Carolina or southern Virginia and who have had a stroke or are at high risk for stroke are the ideal candidates.

Not a fit: People who live outside the catchment area, children under 21, or those who do not meet eligibility criteria for the specific trials are unlikely to be able to participate or benefit directly.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the network could speed access to new stroke prevention and treatment options and improve recovery outcomes for people in the region.

How similar studies have performed: Duke and UNC have strong track records in stroke trial recruitment and follow-up, and regional trial networks have previously supported successful stroke research and improvements in care.
