What this research studies
You would be invited to give feedback in group conversations and try out parts of the program in a small practice session so the team can make it better. The researchers will use those findings to create a manual and then run a randomized comparison where some participants get the PrEP-WISE program right away and others are placed on a waitlist. The team plans to enroll about 185 Black cisgender women overall, with 160 taking part in the randomized test and local PrEP providers also giving input. The study is based on behavior-change ideas and uses peer leaders to support women in making sexual-health decisions and accessing PrEP.
Who could benefit from this research
Good fit: Ideal candidates are cisgender Black women living in New York State who are sexually active and not currently using PrEP.
Not a fit: People already on PrEP, those who are not cisgender Black women, or those living outside New York State are unlikely to be eligible or to benefit directly from this project.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If it works, more Black cisgender women could start PrEP and reduce their risk of HIV.
How similar studies have performed: There are few prior studies focused specifically on PrEP uptake among Black women, so this targeted, peer-led approach is relatively new though peer-support has helped other groups start PrEP.
