What this research studies

As a patient, this project builds Overture, an open-source system to help researchers store and manage very large cancer gene datasets. The team will deliver a turnkey Data Management System that can run locally or in the cloud, suitable for small labs up to large consortia. They will add a framework so visualization and analysis apps can plug into the system and will strengthen data access controls to protect privacy. Over five years the project aims to package, extend, and deploy these tools so researchers can more easily share and analyze tumor genomic data.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: People with cancer who are willing to contribute their tumor genomic data or allow their clinical genomic results to be included in research databases are the most relevant participants for this work.

Not a fit: Patients who do not have genomic testing or who do not contribute their data are unlikely to see direct benefits from this project.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this could speed discovery of new cancer biomarkers and treatments by making tumor genomic data easier to share and analyze.

How similar studies have performed: Similar cancer data platforms (for example TCGA and other genomic repositories) have helped fuel discoveries, and Overture builds on that experience with new integration and visualization features.

About this research

  1. This is an active NIH-funded research project — typically early-stage science, not a clinical trial accepting patient enrollment.
  2. Some NIH-funded labs run parallel clinical studies or seek volunteers for related work. To check, contact the principal investigator or institution listed above.
