What this research studies

The Outreach and Recruitment Core partners with local healthcare providers, community groups, and patient organizations to raise awareness of cancer risks and research in the catchment area. They will form a Catchment Area Advisory Board made up of local stakeholders to guide culturally appropriate outreach and messaging. The team will recruit participants for the SPORE projects on liver, lung, and breast cancers and collect community input to improve study design and dissemination. Outreach uses trusted community networks and tailored materials to engage Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander populations across Hawaiʻi and the USAPIs.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: Ideal participants are people living in Hawaiʻi or the US‑Affiliated Pacific Islands, especially Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander individuals at risk for or affected by liver, lung, or breast cancer.

Not a fit: People who live outside the catchment area or who do not want to engage with research are unlikely to receive direct benefits from these outreach activities.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this work could increase awareness, improve enrollment of understudied communities in cancer research, and help ensure study findings better reflect and benefit local populations.

How similar studies have performed: Community outreach and recruitment cores have previously improved enrollment and representation in cancer research, though focused efforts for AANHPI and USAPI communities are less common and include novel elements here.
