What this research studies
If you are a cancer patient in Ohio, this project works to make it easier for you to learn about and be referred to national cancer prevention and treatment trials. The team will map current referral and enrollment patterns by cancer type and look at factors in clinics, among providers, and from patients that affect participation. They will partner with community organizations, local hospitals, and OSU's clinical trials office to change how trials are offered and promoted. The project focuses on cancers like breast, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, thoracic, and blood cancers across OSUCCC’s statewide catchment area.
Who could benefit from this research
Good fit: Ideal candidates are people with cancer who receive care at OSUCCC or at affiliated community or NCORP sites in Ohio and who are eligible for NCI National Clinical Trials Network protocols.
Not a fit: Patients living outside the OSUCCC referral area, or those who are not eligible for available NCTN trials or who do not want trial participation, are less likely to benefit directly.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, more patients in Ohio could access national clinical trials and the latest prevention or treatment options sooner.
How similar studies have performed: Similar outreach and accrual initiatives have increased clinical trial enrollment in community settings, though results vary by region and disease type.
