What this research studies

You would join the Miami site of the Undiagnosed Diseases Network and receive thorough clinical exams, genetic testing, and other research evaluations with options for telehealth or in-person visits. The team enrolls at least 40 new participants each year from across Florida and collects biological samples for a biorepository to support current and future analyses. Clinicians and researchers look for genetic and non-genetic causes, and share findings and diagnostic support with families. So far the network has reached a roughly 25% diagnosis rate in completed cases and continues to search for new candidate genes and repeat expansions.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: Ideal candidates are people of any age who have a persistent, unexplained medical condition despite prior testing and who can take part in telehealth or travel to the University of Miami site.

Not a fit: People who already have a clear diagnosis or who cannot participate in genetic testing or the required visits may be unlikely to benefit.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the program could provide a clear diagnosis for people with previously unexplained conditions and connect families with guidance and possible targeted care.

How similar studies have performed: The Undiagnosed Diseases Network has previously produced diagnoses in about a quarter of completed cases and has discovered candidate genes, so this site builds on an established, successful network model.
