What this research studies
This project partners with the Parkinson’s Foundation and local community groups to reach Hispanic/Latino people with Parkinson's disease and their caregivers in New York City. They will select, train, and support promotores de salud (community health educators) who will run outreach, education, and awareness activities in neighborhoods. The team will collect feedback from patients and caregivers, track participation, and develop tools and materials—including culturally and linguistically appropriate resources—to reduce barriers to care and research. Over time they will refine strategies to increase clinic engagement and clinical trial participation among Hispanic/Latino communities.
Who could benefit from this research
Good fit: Hispanic or Latino adults with Parkinson's disease and their caregivers who live in the New York City area and are interested in community-based outreach or research opportunities are ideal candidates.
Not a fit: People who do not live in the New York City area, who are not Hispanic/Latino, or who do not want community outreach or research involvement are unlikely to benefit directly from this project.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this work could improve access to Parkinson's care, reduce stigma, and increase Hispanic/Latino participation in research that informs better treatments.
How similar studies have performed: Community health worker and culturally tailored outreach approaches have improved healthcare engagement and research participation in other conditions, but targeted work in Parkinson's among Hispanic/Latino groups is less common.
