What this research studies

Many people with type 2 diabetes find it hard to access programs that teach them how to manage their health at home due to challenges like cost or lack of insurance. This project aims to make these helpful programs more accessible by delivering educational videos directly to patients via text messages. Additionally, some participants will receive extra support from community health workers who can help overcome other life challenges related to their diabetes care. We want to see if these approaches, either alone or together, can make a real difference in managing diabetes.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults with type 2 diabetes who face challenges accessing traditional diabetes education programs.

Not a fit: Patients who already have good access to diabetes education and support, or those not interested in video-based learning or community health worker support, may not find additional benefit from this specific program.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could make diabetes self-management education and support much easier to access for many patients, potentially leading to better health outcomes.

How similar studies have performed: Pilot work has shown that a video-based diabetes education intervention is feasible and acceptable, and community health worker programs have a proven track record in supporting patients with diabetes.
