What this research studies

Many people living with HIV, especially in South Africa, also face challenges with mental health conditions like depression and harmful alcohol use, which can make managing HIV harder. This project aims to train community health workers (CHWs) to provide mental health support during their home visits to people starting or restarting HIV treatment. By adapting proven methods like motivational interviewing and problem-solving for home delivery, we hope to make mental health services more accessible. This approach uses an existing network of CHWs to ensure support is sustainable and reaches those who need it most. We will explore what helps and hinders the success of this home-based support.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: Ideal candidates are people living with HIV in South Africa who are initiating or re-initiating HIV treatment and may be experiencing mental health concerns like depression or harmful alcohol use.

Not a fit: Patients who do not live in South Africa, are not living with HIV, or are not in the process of starting or restarting HIV treatment may not directly benefit from this specific program.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this approach could lead to better mental health and improved engagement in HIV care for people living with HIV in South Africa.

How similar studies have performed: This project builds upon prior successful work that developed clinic-based interventions for people with HIV to support mental health and HIV care outcomes.
