Helping schools better identify children with learning disabilities
Project 3 Engaging Educators around Classification Systems in Schools (T3)
['FUNDING_OTHER'] · FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY · NIH-11164535

What this research studies
This project partners with schools and districts to close the gap between research and what happens in real classrooms so my child gets the right help. The team will identify what stops or helps teachers and schools from using evidence-based assessment practices and match those barriers to practical strategies. They will also test a prototype professional learning community package to see if it is usable for supporting better screening, progress monitoring, and eligibility decisions. Work is done alongside educators so changes fit normal school routines.
Who could benefit from this research
Good fit: Ideal participants are children (and their families) in elementary grades and the schools/districts that serve them, especially those with concerns about reading or language development.
Not a fit: Children outside participating schools or districts, older adolescents, or children without learning concerns are unlikely to benefit directly from this project.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, children with reading and oral language difficulties could be identified more accurately and receive appropriate school supports sooner.
How similar studies have performed: There is strong research showing which assessment approaches work for specific learning disabilities, and implementation-science efforts like this have shown promising but mixed results in improving real-world uptake.
