What this research studies

This partnership between Florida A&M University, the University of Florida, and USC Norris brings researchers together to study why cancer outcomes differ across populations in Florida and California. They will run six translational projects that study the biology behind these differences, collect patient samples and clinical data, and link lab findings with community outreach and screening efforts. The Center builds research capacity at partner institutions and trains new cancer researchers so future studies can reach more patients. Several projects focus directly on pancreatic and lung cancers while others aim to capture population diversity and improve care access.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: Ideal participants are people in Florida or California affected by pancreatic or lung cancer, or community members willing to join outreach, screening, or biospecimen and data-sharing programs.

Not a fit: People with cancers unrelated to the Center's focus or those living far outside the catchment areas may not directly benefit from this specific program.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the Center could lead to earlier detection, more effective treatments, and reduced cancer deaths in the communities it serves.

How similar studies have performed: Other multi-institutional cancer centers that combine laboratory research with community outreach have improved screening and care in some groups, though this specific bi-coastal partnership and combination of projects is relatively unique.
