What this research studies

As a patient, this network runs large clinical trials and observational studies at more than 100 eye clinics across the United States so I could join a study near my home. Studies are coordinated through a central center and use standardized retinal imaging, centralized image reading centers, and common protocols to compare treatments, test new drugs or devices, and track outcomes like vision and quality of life. The network focuses on diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, and other retinal diseases and collects clinical data, images, and patient-reported information. Because the DRCR network is a standing infrastructure with experienced investigators, its studies can be large and influence care more quickly than single-site trials.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: People with diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal vein occlusion, or other retinal retinal diseases who meet specific eligibility criteria at participating U.S. clinics are the typical candidates.

Not a fit: People without retinal disease or those who do not meet trial eligibility (for example because of other serious medical conditions) are unlikely to receive direct benefit from current network studies.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the work could produce safer, more effective treatments and clearer care guidelines that help prevent vision loss and improve daily functioning.

How similar studies have performed: Previous DRCR Network trials have already changed clinical practice and improved visual outcomes in diabetic eye disease, so this network's approach has a strong track record.
