What this research studies

This research aims to address the higher rates of cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease among Black Americans by developing a Black aging cohort in Southern California. The project will engage community members to understand the social and structural factors that influence their participation in brain health research. By utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods, the research will identify barriers and facilitators to participation in Alzheimer's-related studies. The goal is to create culturally relevant strategies that enhance engagement and representation of Black communities in clinical trials.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this research are Black individuals living in Southern California who are interested in brain health and Alzheimer's disease.

Not a fit: Patients who do not identify as Black or those who do not reside in Southern California may not receive benefits from this research.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this research could lead to improved understanding and interventions for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias specifically tailored for Black communities.

How similar studies have performed: Previous research has shown that community engagement strategies can successfully increase participation of underrepresented groups in clinical trials, suggesting potential for success in this approach.
