What this research studies

You would be part of a community-driven effort based in Acres Homes that partners with local schools and the Be Well Communities program. One project offers a multi-level nutrition program aimed at elementary students and their parents to try to improve BMI and metabolic health. A second project adapts a physical activity program for cancer survivors to improve strength and daily functioning. All work is embedded in local services and environments so changes fit everyday life in your neighborhood.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: Best candidates are residents of Acres Homes: elementary school students and their parents for the nutrition project, and local cancer survivors for the physical activity project.

Not a fit: People who do not live in Acres Homes or who are not within the target age/ survivor groups may not receive direct benefit from these specific local programs.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, the programs could lower BMI and metabolic risk in children and parents and improve physical functioning for cancer survivors, which may reduce long-term cancer risk and improve quality of life.

How similar studies have performed: Similar community-based nutrition and activity programs have shown mixed but promising effects on BMI and fitness, while place-based survivorship physical activity work is less common.
