What this research studies

Many people in diverse communities, especially Latino and Vietnamese populations in Southern California, face higher risks of stroke and heart disease due to high blood pressure. This program aims to address these health differences by working directly within communities. We are developing a special educational program called SERVE OC that teaches skills to reduce vascular risks, involving families and using community health workers for support. Our goal is to help people make lasting healthy changes to prevent high blood pressure and improve heart health for everyone.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: Ideal candidates are adults from Latino and Vietnamese communities in Southern California who are at risk for or have high blood pressure and are interested in community-based health education.

Not a fit: Patients not living in the targeted Southern California communities or those not interested in community-based, family-supported health education may not directly benefit from this specific program.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this program could significantly lower the rates of high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease in underserved multi-ethnic communities.

How similar studies have performed: There is growing evidence that involving families and social networks in behavioral interventions can improve their effectiveness in reducing vascular risk.
