What this research studies
This program provides academically promising medical students from five Chicago-area medical schools with an immersive summer experience in basic science and outcomes research. Participants will work closely with experienced mentors who are funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). The program includes onboarding sessions, training in research ethics, and opportunities to engage in meaningful research projects over an 8-week period. Students will also attend daily lectures to enhance their learning and understanding of the research process.
Who could benefit from this research
Good fit: Ideal candidates are first-year medical students from the greater Chicago area, particularly those from underrepresented minority groups and women.
Not a fit: Patients who are not medical students or who do not reside in the Chicago area may not benefit from this program.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this program could help cultivate the next generation of clinician-scientists, ultimately improving patient care and medical research outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: Similar mentorship and research training programs have shown success in developing future medical professionals, indicating a strong potential for this program as well.
