What this research studies
Whooping cough is a very contagious illness that is becoming more common, and it's hard to tell apart from other colds in its early stages. This makes it difficult for doctors to treat patients quickly and stop the spread. This project is developing a rapid test, similar to a COVID-19 or RSV test, that can be used right in a doctor's office or urgent care clinic. The goal is to help identify whooping cough early by detecting specific markers from a nose swab. This will allow patients to get the right care sooner and help prevent the illness from spreading further in the community.
Who could benefit from this research
Good fit: Ideal candidates for this future test would be symptomatic patients, especially children, who visit pediatrician offices, urgent care clinics, or hospital emergency rooms with respiratory symptoms.
Not a fit: Patients who do not have symptoms of whooping cough or other respiratory illnesses would not directly benefit from this diagnostic test.
Why it matters
Potential benefit: If successful, this test could lead to faster diagnosis and treatment for whooping cough, helping to control its spread and improve patient outcomes.
How similar studies have performed: This project builds upon successful results and data from earlier phases, suggesting a foundation of prior progress.
