What this research studies

This research investigates the use of an enriched, immersive environment to aid recovery in adults with severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI). The approach combines cognitive, social, and physical stimuli to enhance neuroplasticity and facilitate rehabilitation. Participants will engage in a six-week program at a therapeutic café, where they will receive therapy while performing tasks in a real-world setting, such as interacting with customers and managing a kiosk. This method aims to make recovery more engaging and integrated into daily life compared to traditional therapy.

Who could benefit from this research

Good fit: Ideal candidates for this research are adults aged 21 and older who have experienced severe traumatic brain injuries and are in the chronic phase of recovery.

Not a fit: Patients with mild traumatic brain injuries or those who are not in the chronic phase of recovery may not benefit from this research.

Why it matters

Potential benefit: If successful, this research could significantly improve recovery outcomes and quality of life for individuals with severe traumatic brain injuries.

How similar studies have performed: Previous research has shown promising results in using enriched environments for rehabilitation in animal models, and this approach is being translated to human applications.
